Mesa Verde National Park, located in southwestern Colorado, is the site of the 800 year old Spruce Tree House Alcove. The nose of the alcove contains a thin arch delineated by a persistent curved crack (called Richardson crack). Rockfalls from the arch and adjacent rock surfaces have shown the need for a new assessment of arch stability and additional support efforts.
Rodrigo Muñoz is a Mining Engineer with 3 years of experience in geomechanical laboratory testing on intact rock. His thesis project is focused on the application of IMASS in pillars, developing a new methodology to calibrate models with the Lunder & Pakalnis empirical model, as well as studying the pillar resistance difference using the IMASS and Hoek Brown constitutive models.
