Charles Fairhurst - The Long Shadow

Professor Charles Fairhurst is at once a scientist, engineer, husband and father. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and Officier de la Légion d’Honneur, France.

Charles’ pioneering scientific works have included contributions to early fundamental understanding of drilling, hydraulic fracturing and general rock mechanics that have had far-reaching impact. His genius has been bringing immensely talented people together and inspiring them to achieve a success much greater than the sum of the parts. This book is a broad, yet intimate biography of his life so far, delving into the history, the family, the works, the people and the passions, with recollections from Charles, his family, peers and many students and colleagues who collectively make up the “Minnesota Rock Mechanics Mafia” and beyond.

The Long Shadow is the tale of a life lived with honor, compassion and kindness, while also achieving success in academia and business. It closes with his love for the people around him, and his views on the future of rock engineering for those that walk in his footsteps. Now in his 90th year, the man is still as astute, witty and determined as ever.
